A rightful favourite addition to marine aquariums; the red leg or scarlet leg hermit crab is easy to keep over the long term and adds a very desirable splash of colour to a sometimes dull clean up crew. These crabs reach a good size for most reefs striking a balance between so small you lose them and so large they move all your carefully placed rocks.
Red leg hermits are primarily herbivores, if algae is lacking in the aquarium their diet should be substituted with dried seaweed or algae based pellets. Red legs have a voracious appetite and are considered masterful scavengers consuming most things as part of their diet from algae to meaty left overs from feeding fish.
