This commonly found pistol shrimp is lives in a commensal relationship with various types of goby, very commonly seen with yellow watchman gobies but also known to associate with randalls and other gobies given the chance.

Watching a pistol shrimp excavate a burrow is fascinating, often the goby will appear to watch for danger whilst the shrimp improves upon the burrow. Often they will close the entrance to the burrow at night and open it again in the day time.  

Sandy substrate with larger rubble or a few flat rocks or shells to provide some support create the best environment for pistol shrimp. Whilst they can be a bit disruptive to the bottom of the tank it isn't usually a problem if corals are kept mostly off the sand bed or the rocks supporting the corals are buried all the way down to the glass so the shrimp cannot get below them, this particular species does not seem to be excessively disruptive.

Pistol shrimps will feed from the substrate without any specific feeding requirements beyond a healthy tank with other occupants.
